September program: Dedicated to United We Serve

United We Serve

September’s film program is being presented in support of the United We Serve campaign, launched by the White House to support the National Day of Service & Remembrance on 9/11.

This campaign is designed to get Americans out there helping their communities, and we here @ Cinema Speakeasy would like to take a moment to encourage you to do just that: Do something nice for someone, or for a bunch of people, on 9/11 (and every other day, if you can).

Check out our event profile on serve.gov, and – what the hell – create your own service-oriented event while you’re at it. You can organize a neighborhood cleanup, or just buy a homeless person lunch.

In the meantime, see you on Sep 1st, at 7:45, at the Echo Park Film Center!

September’s film: THE GREEN RUSH

The Green Rush

by Jason S. Edwards
co-produced Casey Casseday
TRT. 55 Minutes

From producer/director Jason S. Edwards comes Cinema Speakeasy’s September film: The Green Rush. Set in rural Northern California, The Green Rush chronicles the lives of several marijuana farmers over an entire outdoor grow season.

On film, these sometime outlaws identify themselves by the color of the bandanas they wear to hide their faces. Thus, Mr. Red, Mr. Blue and Mrs. Pink talk us through the dangers and heartbreaks of growing crops that nudge at the line of legality, and bring the battle between state and federal law into sharp relief.

And let’s not fool ourselves: Growing pot is not an easy job. From DEA fly-bys and the looming threat of prison time, to family hardships, thievery and flat-out financial struggles, these farmers face an enormous uphill battle.

Featuring never-before-seen footage of marijuana cultivation, The Green Rush uncovers the gritty, blue-collar world of this notoriously private and dangerous profession.

Why this is all so special

The Green Rush is being self-distributed. That means that screenings like these, as well as festival runs, ARE the theatrical release. This is it. You won’t see it elsewhere. It’s democracy folks, and you gotta support it.

September’s screening is curated by Georgi Goldman

Wrap Report: Georgi Goldman and Visioneers, August 2009

Cinema Speakeasy: A sweaty crowdThe Echo Park Film Center was at capacity tonight for the primero edition of Cinema Speakeasy. Over 70 people crammed themselved into the cozy space – sharing wine and making new friends (rubbing elbows will do that to a crowd of strangers) – for a sweltering screening of our inaugural film, Visioneers (directed by Jared Drake, and starring Zach Galifianakis).

To start things off and to get everybody thinking, Georgi Goldman relayed her take on the relationship between the message and the medium in film and in art. She made some interesting parallels between the plight of the modern media-maker as compared to the mid-century photographer.

Special thanks are in order to Paolo Davanzo and Lisa Marr from the Echo Park Film Center for being such gracious hosts. But, no less important, thanks to all who came and suffered the heat in the name of independent film. Don’t forget to check in for the September 1st edition. Our next film will be unveiled soon!

Filmmaker Mag Tweets Cinema Speakeasy

Thanks to Filmmaker Mag!Ahhh… the digital life….

Without the slightest sense of irony, we’re tickled pink to report that our favorite independent film publication, Filmmaker Magazine, has given us a Twitter endorsement. Apparently we’re part of a small group of people ‘who know what’s next’, and that is rad.

Seriously, stop snickering: This makes us feel very good. Twitter is the new broadsheet, dontcha know.
