Fundraiser for Japan, feat. ‘LiTTLEROCK’. LA, Apr. 3

Food, Drink, Movies. DISCUSS.
The best way to end your weekend, ever.

In light of recent events in Japan, we will be giving 35% of the proceeds at the door to the tsunami relief efforts through Second Harvest Japan.

CSLA is excited to team up with our newest venue partner: The super hip Royal/T, Los Angeles’ first Japanese-style cosplay café.

We think we’ve found the best possible film to show at this unique Japanese-inspired space, a movie Filmmaker Magazine calls ‘the best film not playing at a theatre near you’: Mike Ott’s LiTTLEROCK

LiTTLEROCK is the story of a Japanese brother (Rintaro Sawamoto) and sister (played by the remarkable Atsuko Okatsuka, who also co-wrote the script) visiting America. When their car breaks down, the siblings find themselves in the dusty town of Littlerock, CA. After a chance meeting with the local youth, including a particularly eccentric loner played pitch-perfectly by newcomer Cory Zacharia, the sister is charmed into staying behind while her brother continues on. Despite the language barrier, relationships mature and become complex. Sometimes, saying goodbye is not as easy as it would appear.

Join us for a cozy Sunday evening: Royal/T will be providing libations and food for purchase – all served by adorable cosplay girls in sexy maid outfits. As always, the Cinema Speakeasy mavens will ensure you’re entertained, meet new people, and maybe even win a fabulous raffle prize from our generous donors. So whether you plan on bringing friends or making new ones, dewa sono toki ni (that’s ‘see you then’, in Japanese).

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Sunday, April 3rd
Doors at 6:00, Film at 7:30
Royal T (8910 Washington Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232)
Tickets: $10 at the door (does not cover food & drink)

About Second Harvest Japan: Second Harvest Japan distributes food to soup kitchens, orphanages, the elderly, emergency shelters, single mothers, the homeless, migrant workers, and many others. Second Harvest is currently implementing disaster relief activities in the Tohoku area, which was severely hit by recent Japan’s great earthquake.

About Jordan A. Yamaji Smith: Smith teaches Comparative Literature and Asian Studies at UCLA and CSU Long Beach. He curates several Japanese film series, and recently became the Events Director for Japan Film Society.

About Royal/T: Royal/T is a playful collision of spaces—café/shop/art space—presented in stunning fusion. An eclectic mix of retail and contemporary art reimagined in the surrounds of LA’s first Japanese-style cosplay café.

WRAP REPORT

With your help, Cinema Spekaeasy raised enough money for over $4000.00 in food for Japanese quake victims. And, we had fun doing it at Royal/T’s beautiful, spacious and artsy digs.

The coolest thing about Royal/T is that it’s really BIG, so tons of people can show up without needing to bump elbows. Our CS friends spent the pre-show hangout eating food, wandering the art gallery and making new friends. Just like we like it.

The very lovely cast and crew of LiTTLEROCK was on hand to hang out, take questions, and party with us. And of course, the film was fantastic.

Finally, Jordan Smith’s Q&A featured what were probably the most intelligent set of questions we had witnessed.

Flying Dogs and Fancy Hair: A Double-Feature Drink-Along. Los Angeles, Mar. 18

In a magical land not too far away, two good princesses teamed up with a castle of moving images to present two very over-the-top films from the eighties for you to drink along to without TOO much irony. Come join us as Cinema Speakeasy and the Downtown Independent present a double-feature drink-along featuring ‘The Neverending Story‘ and ‘Labyrinth

A double feature drink-along is just what it sounds like. We watch two movies, and play drinking games. Costumes are highly encouraged (but not mandatory), and the best one, judged by our crowd applause-o-meter, wins a mystery prize, our undying respect, and the seat of honor!

Make your boyfriend dress as David Bowie. Make your girlfriend dress as a goblin. Wear a flying dog hat. Whatever you do, make it glitter, 80’s, and totally FANTASY!

You can buy delicious drinks (including beer) at the theatre. We’ll be implementing an interactive, theatre-wide drinking game, so make sure to bring your designated driver lest ye over-do it on the Coca-Cola (or, you know, the harder stuff)!

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Friday, March 18th
Doors open at 7 for some pre-movie imbibing
The Neverending Story starts at 8 PM, Labyrinth starts at 9 PM (ish)
The Downtown Independent Theatre,  251 S. Main Street Los Angeles, 90012 213.617.1033
Tickets available at the door for $12

Memorize these drinking game rules so you miss no chance to chug your beverage of choice. Yell out what you see and take a swig…

  • Every time you see a cute (magical flying) dog
  • Every time you see a large snail
  • Every time a rockbiter bites a rock
  • Everytime you see David playing with his orb
  • Every time you see a goblin looking shifty
  • And a free-for-all dance party during the muppet-flailing, Jim Henson-puppeteered, David Bowie-prancing ‘Magic Dance’

WRAP REPORT

300 or so people showed up to CS:LA’s drink-along, and 300 or so people got drunk as hell on… ahem… lemonade.

We posted some of the photos from the Double-Feature of ‘Labyrinth’ and ‘The Neverending Story’ – which happened on March 18th at the Downtown Independent – to our Flickr page, and even more to our Facebook page.

‘The Warriors’ Drink-Along. San Francisco, March 3rd

Cinema Speakeasy SF presents a DRINK-A-LONG to one of your all-time favorite movies: THE WARRIORS! THIS EVENT IS 21+. WE WILL BE CHECKING YOUR ID AT THE DOOR.

Thursday March 3rd
Doors at 7:30, movie at 8
GAFFTA (55 Taylor St. San Francisco, CA 94102)
Tickets available at the door

FAQ:

Q: What’s a drink-a-long?
A: It’s kind of like a sing-a-long, but with beer. Just like your favorite drinking games of yester-year, upon the agreed upon cues (see below) everyone drinks! It’s a fun way to party with the CS:SF crew and watch your favorite cult classic, all in one!Q: Okay, but I don’t/can’t/won’t drink.
A: Don’t worry, you won’t have to! You can still cheer and boo and knock back your soda water and lime with the rest of us. No one’s judging you (we’re just looking at you like that ‘cuz we think you’re kinda cute).

Q: But I thought Cinema Speakeasy was all about exhibiting and celebrating the best in independent film?

A: Of course we are, silly! But we thought it’d be fun to take a night off and watch an old favorite. We’ll be back to our regularly scheduled programming next month.

Q: Okay, I’m in. What are the rules?

A: We’re glad you asked!

Make friends with your neighbor, and make sure they’re not cheating.
- Every time a new gang comes on the scene: DRINK!
- Every time Cyrus says, “Can you dig it!”: HI-FIVE the person next to you!
- Every time they (barely) make the subway: CHEER! And cheers the person next to you!
- Every time the Warriors win a fight: Yell “WARRIORS!” and drink!

Q: Anything else?
A: Yes! Come dressed as your favorite gang character from the movie (FROM THE MOVIE. No bandanas, or whatever the kids are doing these days) and receive a free raffle ticket. CAN YOU DIG IT???

WRAP REPORT

By all accounts, this past week’s Cinema Speakeasy: San Francisco was a smash hit, and we couldn’t be more delighted. Thanks to our friends over at the Thrillist and FunCheapSF for letting the people know about the WARRIORS drink-along. In case you missed it, here’s a quick recap:

CAN YOU DIG IT?: Good thing there’s no noise ordinance at GAFFTA, because the roar of the audience after perhaps the most famous line of the movie, matched only by the clanking of cheersing PBRs, was riotus. The energy kept up throughout the whole movie, peppered by shout out louds, warnings, one-liners, and oh, SNAPS! directed at the characters on-screen. What fun!

Folks dressed up! Oh, how it warmed our hearts to see some Lizzies in the audience as well as the Hi-Hats,  who looked especially smashing in their bowler hats and boots.  We even got a patch to put up in our offices one day!  When we get offices!  One day!

Folks that dressed up won prizes!: Good things happen when you participate. For being good sports, we gave all of those who dressed up free raffle tickets, and two of the three winners were the ones that dressed up. Big thanks to our homies at Beautiful/Decay, Funky Door Yoga, and Dancing Regeneration Massage for donating such lovely prizes.

You guys really know your Warriors, huh?: To get everyone warmed up and in full Warriors effect mode, we tossed a couple of trivia questions out to the crowd. Who knew that the same woman who plays the radio DJ is also the voice of the popular tv show, “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?”  YOU knew!!  Smartypants.

Lowlights:

Sold OUT!: Oh, how we HATE to turn folks away! We reached both seating and standing room capacity before the movie even started. We’re working on setting up pre-sales so that you’ll have a better idea of when shows are sold-out before you make the trek.

(That’s the only low light.  Everything else was pretty great.)

It was a wonderful night and we look forward to future drink-alongs.  For April, we’re back to our regularly awesome scheduled program of celebrating the best indie films that flew under the radar, along with fun games, prizes, and some seriously good-looking film lovers.  Stay tuned!!
